Fort Lauderdale Airport : Flights Hotels Car RentalsDiscount Flights to Fort Lauderdale In addition to the amazing services offered by the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, a 1.5 million square foot office and industrial area surrounds the airport known as the Industrial Airpark. Having reached 95% occupancy, an additional 1.0 million square feet is in the planning stages. The Airpark is the home for many distinguishable tenants to include TCI Telecom, Citicorp, Marriott, and Bellsouth among many others. As this area continues to develop, more top companies are vying to make this park their home. The Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport was built in 1941 as a means of training Naval Aviators including former President George Bush who was being trained as an Airman. After six years of being a government training ground, the Federal government opened the airport for public use in 1947. In the early years as a public airport, there was little nearby development and rather than using the runways for airplane takeoff and landing, they were used more for local drag racing. To enhance the airport and bring jobs to the area, the City of Fort Lauderdale established a special Board, selling land to top companies as a way of generating money for runway construction, guidance signage, and special lighting. The first building used for flight school maintenance, which was erected in 1959, is still being used today. As other businesses saw this success, they slowly started moving their own operations to the Airpark. By 1974, the development grew dramatically and the City of Fort Lauderdale made a decision to stop selling the land associated with the airport and only bring tenants in on a lease only basis. This decision provided continued growth and incoming revenue without selling off more land. There are now over 125 businesses making up the population of Fort Lauderdale Industrial Airpark. The plan to enhance the airport not only worked, it turned into a huge success. That first step forward has created the establishment of six full-service FBOs, charter companies, refurbishing companies, flight schools, and avionic shops. The original unsophisticated airport from the 1940's has now grown into an impressive, functioning service that handles well over 250,000 flights annually. |
